Job Description
Build the platform that keeps hard-to-recycle waste out of landfill across Australia. ReSmart is a Sydney sustainability company, and this role owns the Rails backend everything runs on.
Location: Philippines, fully remote. You work with our team in Sydney.
Hours: The Sydney team starts at 9:00am Sydney time, which is 7:00am in Manila (6:00am during Australian daylight saving, October to April). We do not expect you to match that start; we care about good overlap with the Sydney day, and you shape the rest. Philippine public holidays.
Employment: Full-time employee under Philippine labour law through Remote.com (an employer-of-record). SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, 13th month, paid annual and sick leave, HMO.
Salary: ₱200,000 to ₱300,000 gross basic per month, paid in PHP, depending on experience.
Start: Ideally within 30 days of offer.
Equipment: You bring your own laptop and a reliable internet connection.
About ReSmart
ReSmart makes recycling easy for councils, businesses and households across Australia. We collect the things that cannot go in the kerbside bin and make sure they are recycled properly. The technology that makes this possible is built and run by a small team in Sydney, and this role sits at the centre of it.
The role
We are looking for an experienced backend engineer to look after the core of our platform. You will work closely with the CTO, our mobile developer, and the operations and account teams in Sydney, and you will have a real say in what gets built and how.
You will be the engineer responsible for our Rails platform, so we are looking for someone who has owned a production system before and is comfortable being the person it depends on. You will have a thorough handover and the CTO alongside you.

- Integrations. Pricing, billing, invoicing and shipping, and the webhooks that connect them, including Stripe, Xero, Shippit and Squarespace.
- The apps. The backend and APIs behind our customer and driver mobile apps (built in Flutter by our mobile developer).
- Admin portal. The internal tools that give our operations and account teams visibility, control and the data they need to run and optimise the service.
- Enhancements. Understanding where our processes hurt, turning that into a clear plan, and owning it through to execution, deployment and monitoring.
- AI in everyday work. We use coding agents as part of how we ship, and we review their output as carefully as our own.
What a good first 90 days looks like
By the end of your first three months you are comfortable with the codebase, its data model and its integrations, you have shipped changes to production and delivered at least one meaningful improvement end to end, and you are the person the team turns to for the platform.
What we are looking for
- Experience. 5+ years as a software engineer, at least 2 of them as the person responsible for a production backend, not just a contributor to one.
- Strong fundamentals. A Computer Science degree or equivalent, and the habits that come with it: data modelling, correctness, testing.
- Relational databases. Comfortable modelling, querying and thinking about performance. PostgreSQL is ideal.
- Care and initiative. You like leaving things a little better than you found them and you speak up when something could be done better.
- Clear communication. English is our working language and most of it is written. Comfortable working with people who are not engineers, and honest about what you know and do not know yet.

Our current tech stack
Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, Sidekiq, Heroku, GitHub. React and TypeScript on the admin portal. Flutter on the mobile apps, which consume your APIs.
Rails experience is a real advantage, but we are hiring for engineering depth. If you can learn a codebase and reason carefully, the framework will follow.
Why ReSmart?
- Real impact. Your work changes what happens at someone's door and what ends up in landfill.
- A small team that cares. About each other, about the work, and about the planet.
- Room to shape things. Our architecture is established but not rigid, and your ideas will be heard.
- Daytime hours. You work the same day as the Sydney team, not a night shift, with room to shape your own start.
How to apply
Apply here on LinkedIn with your CV and a link to something you have built or owned: a GitHub profile, a live product, or a short write-up of a production system you were responsible for.
The process: a 30-minute intro call, a technical conversation with the CTO, a small paid take-home exercise, then an offer. We aim to complete it within three weeks.
